Amenities now count supermarkets, pharmacies and post offices

Feature

Until now, the amenities dimension only counted public facilities: daycare centre, school, hospital, playground. The most common trip in everyday life was missing: shopping. From now on, local shops count too.

Groceries, pharmacy, post office

The score measures how many shops are within walking distance, not just the nearest one:

  • Groceries within 500 metres: supermarket, discounter, Späti, bakery.
  • Pharmacy within 800 metres.
  • Post offices and parcel shops within 1,000 metres.

If no shop is within reach, the distance to the nearest one still counts, just at a reduced weight. All locations come from OpenStreetMap.

Proximity is part of quality of life

A Kiez with a supermarket, pharmacy and post office around the corner makes everyday life shorter. This proximity counts in its own right, regardless of how far away the nearest daycare centre or hospital is.

No assessment of economic strength

The score stays at five dimensions with 20 per cent each. We only reweighted within the amenities dimension, to make room for local shops. Land values, business density and rents deliberately do not feed in. A Kiez is not better because more money is invested there.

Methodology

All terms, weights and data sources are described in the Methodology for the Kiez score.
