About navigator.berlin
In short
navigator.berlin puts open Berlin data on noise, climate, green space, mobility, housing, social structure and elections on one map. One address is enough to see what it looks like there.
The project
Berlin publishes plenty of open data, such as noise maps, climate data, land values and election results, spread across different sources and formats. navigator.berlin brings it together in one place and makes it understandable per address.
The site has been online since May 2026. In August 2026 the taz(opens in new tab) reported on the Heat Navigator, and the updates show how things have developed.
Who is behind it
I'm Matze Schmidbauer, a solutions architect from Berlin, and I run navigator.berlin.
It's a private project; mtc.berlin(opens in new tab) is my employer.
You can find more about me on schmidbauer.dev(opens in new tab), Bluesky(opens in new tab) and LinkedIn(opens in new tab).
How it is built
I work spec-first: a product document, UX spec, architecture and individual stories come before any code, and I document larger decisions with their reasoning and the rejected alternative.
AI agents write the code against that spec, tests usually come before the implementation, and I review the results myself.
I covered the method at Svelte Meetup Berlin on 2 September 2026: navigator.berlin: specced, not coded(opens in new tab) (slides). Technical details are on the Architecture page.
Stance and limits
- The project is privately funded, with no commercial model and no advertising.
- There are no cookies and no user accounts.
- The score measures environment and infrastructure, not social status; social structure appears only as neutral context.
- The map does not replace official information; where it differs from the original source, the source applies.
The methodology explains how the values come about.
Data and code
The data comes from open sources; sources and licences per layer are on the Licences page, and the Data page lists every layer.
The code is MIT-licensed on GitHub(opens in new tab).
